Update for "END of an ERA" Reunion.

The organisers of the reunion have been asked if it is for steam stokers only & the reply form Phil Armstrong is that all sections of engineering are welcome. I think this is a good thing for many reasons; as time marches on our numbers (steam) are starting to dwindle, also while steam was the dominant form of propulsion up to the 90's we also had Diesel Stokers by our side. Coming from a naval engineering background I would like to see Stokers of all denominations at our reunions.

“End of an Era” RAN Steam Reunion

Brisbane 22-25 April 2011

The End of an Era RAN Steam Reunion will be held in Brisbane from Friday 22 till Monday 25th April 2011.  The Reunion is being organised by the Nirimba Queensland Sub Section of the Naval Association of Australia.  The aim of the Reunion is to celebrate the significance of those men and women who served in the RAN during the steam ships era.  We also remember the families and others involved in the RAN during that period and so the Reunion is intended to bring together a vast number of people from all walks of life and from all parts of the world. It is important to remember the diesel navy as well as the Fleet Air Arm, submariners and the many dockyard and associated civilian workers of the time.

Planning is well underway and a number of activities are being organised for the Reunion.  Subject to confirmation, these include the following events:

Friday 22nd April

From 1400 - Registration

1800 - Meet & Greet includes beverages & finger food

Saturday 23rd April

Leisure time with friends and families

Day trips to the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and surrounding districts

Winery tours

River cruises

Golf

Lawn bowls

1930 - Reunion Dinner includes meal, beverages and entertainment

Sunday 24th April

1000 - Reunion B-B-Q and tour of the Queensland Maritime Museum.

Monday 25th April

Anzac Day Services

1000 - Brisbane Anzac Day Parade

Naturally a great deal of planning goes into organising this Reunion and details are continually refined.  To ensure delegates maximise their opportunities for accommodation and travel we suggest you begin preparations for the Reunion now.

Registration fees will be only marginally dearer than 2008, say $220.00.

Accommodation can be arranged now at 2009 prices by utilising the services of SALT Reunions who can be contacted at Salt Reunion Central, PO Box 445 Maroochydore Qld 4558 Australia, Phone 1300 797577, Fax Number (07) 5479 1673 or at http://salt.affordableholidays.com.au/salt/

Salt Reunions can connect you with caravan parks and budget accommodation if needed.  You can also link up with others using Salt for accommodation arrangements.

Regardless, you do not have to use SALT Reunions for your accommodation, and are under no obligation to do so however, the Reunion Organisers use SALT Reunions exclusively.

Most Reunion venues and activities will not give a firm price until 2010 and therefore we cannot give final pricings until then.  Prices will be marginally dearer than 2008.

2010 Anzac weekend get-together

A reminder of the Anzac weekend get-together in Sydney next year. This event is for all association members and is not a reunion of any particular term or era. There is a free day in the program so mini-reunions can be planned by those attending.

The website has been updated for members to indicate which events they would like to attend. Some pricing details need to be firmed up and you will be notified as soon as they are put in place. Putting in your expression of interest is not binding.

The venue for the meet & greet and the dinner dance is the Parramatta RSL Club. More details are available on the website. Just log in and follow the links.

Membership

The association’s membership continues to grow and we welcome all those who have recently joined. This forthcoming get-together is for you folks as well and we look forward to meeting up with you then if you can make it.

Email apology

On Saturday 3rd October an email inadvertently went out to all members. Not a computer error, entirely a human one and I apologise for any inconvenience.

The error occurred when a server side script was supposed to send a test email just to me but I uploaded an incorrect version of the script. The responses generated were many and almost every response was forgiving. Again I apologise.

H.M.A.S. MELBOURNE REUNION 2010

The Reunion planning continues. The evening of Saturday 16/10/10 will be our main event in the way of a seated Dinner with Guest Speaker. Other optional activities are being organised for that weekend, which precedes Navy Week in the Shoalhaven Region.

Provisional Program

Friday Evening 15/10/10

1600: Registration, Meet & Greet. Venue to be decided

Saturday 16/10/10

0930: Registration, Escorted Bus Tours of H.M.A.S. Albatross and also visit the

F.A.A. Museum.

1700: Registration and Reunion Dinner at the Bomaderry R.S.L. Club

Sunday 17/10/10

1000: The F.A.A. Museum is organising a Public Day to co-inside with the reunion. It is

envisaged to present a static display of aircraft including the Historical Flight as

well as a collection of Vintage, Veteran and Classic Cars.

1200: BBQ Lunch at the White Ensign Club, next to the Museum, only accessible for

Reunion participants.

This provisional program is only an indication of the Associations intentions and subject to change. We are seeking the assistance of those residing in the Shoalhaven region that would be prepared to organise, on our behalf, Golf and Bowls days on either the Friday or Monday.

Early in 2010, with a confirmed program, we will be asking for “intentions of attending” the various activities. Once we have these numbers, a costing can be prepared before, asking you for a definite commitment.

Dean Gedling

Junior Recruit Memorial Project

G'day Kerry, you may be aware of the intention to establish a memorial at Leeuwin to the 13,000 ex Junior Recruits. This  will be established as a War Memorial in 2010 and give recognition and memory to those JR's who served in the various conflicts and peace keeping endeavours that the RAN has been committed to since 1960.
The 50th Anniversary of the JR scheme will be on the 13th July 2010 and a large reunion is planned for the event that includes the dedication of the memorial. I am confident that amongst the many JR's who served and continue to serve there were many stokers who would want to be part of this event. We produce a newsletter about every two months that gives an update to the memorial project and if possible we would appreciate information from these being placed on your we site. Similarly our reunion committee has established a web site at www.jrsreunion.org where ex JR's can register for the reunion and also make donations to the memorial construction.
Cheers
Ken Dobbie
Project Committee Chairman
